What is Synchronized Skating?
Synchronized team skating has been an emerging discipline within the U.S. and international skating communities throughout the past decade. In the United States alone, synchronized team skating has attracted thousands of skaters, making it the fastest growing of the five skating disciplines within U.S. Figure Skating's membership. College opportunities are also growing every year, as synchronized skating is in the process of becoming an NCAA emerging sport! Synchronized team skating is a highly technical form of team skating that is characterized by complex formations and intricate transitions performed by teams of 8 to 20 skaters. Skaters of all ages and skill levels compete in synchronized team skating. The teams compete in qualifying events that culminate with the annual U.S. Synchronized Team Skating Championships. U.S. Figure Skating also selects 10-12 synchronized teams each year to represent the United States at international synchronized skating competitions. Participation on a synchronized skating team improves skaters’ skills, speed, posture, presentation, and confidence on the ice. It also provides skaters with a sense of club spirit, lessons in cooperation and teamwork, and life long friendships.
